Trouble Brewin

Trouble Brewin'

Trouble Brewin’
by Blair Denholm

Catherine Brewer, (age unspecified, but somewhere between, say, 13 and 15) tries to trick her parents into letting her stay home from school in order to avoid a boring excursion to an old people’s home, called Passing Winds. The attempt fails miserably, and she has to go on the school trip. Once there, she befriends an old Russian woman, Olga Pivovarov (this surname means Brewer in English), who claims to have been incarcerated there against her will. Catherine busts the old woman out of the institution and hides her temporarily in a play house in her back yard. From there, the action transfers to an abandoned theater in the city earmarked for demolition to make way for a fast-food emporium. On the way, they become acquainted with a host of crazy characters, including an unorthodox PI, a Lebanese taxi-driver with his fingers in many pies, and a helpful Rabbi, who temporarily houses Olga in a spare room of the city synagogue. Catherine embarks on a quest to find Olga’s wayward son, Boris, whom Olga holds responsible for her predicament. With the help of their new friends, Catherine and Olga discover that Boris was merely the victim of both his conniving wife and the manager of the retirement home. Both of these evil women get their just desserts and Olga gets her house back. As a sign of her appreciation, Olga sets up a college fund for Catherine.
